Reva Mae (Speak) Payne, age 91, was born Reva Mae Speak on December 5, 1925 in Lemons, Missouri to Clellan Elmer Speak and Mable Viora Reger Speak. She passed away peacefully at the Twin Pines Adult Care Center, Kirksville, Missouri, on November 13, 2017.
Reva graduated from Kirksville High School in 1943 and the KOH-Laughlin Nurses Training School in 1946, passing the boards to become a Registered Nurse several months later upon reaching the age of 21. On August 29, 1948, she was united in marriage to the Reverend Richard E. Payne in Overland Park, Kansas.
Reva leaves a loving family: Two sons John Payne of College Park, Maryland; James Payne and wife Sharal of Raymore, Missouri; two daughters Rebecca McClanahan and husband Marvin of Kirksville; Mary Jane Suppasansathorn and husband Noppadol of Leawood, Kansas and a daughter-in-law Mariann McCorkle Salisbury. Surviving are ten grandchildren, Olivia and Zachary Payne; Andrew McClanahan and wife Astrid, Bryan McClanahan and wife Marina Cramer, Justin, Jeremy and Jessica Payne; Melanie Suppasansathorn Meyers and husband Christopher, Jared Suppasansathorn, and Angela Suppasansathorn Scalise and husband Dominick. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren, Zion, Lincoln, Uma, Forest, and Quentin Meyers; Amélie McClanahan; Leo Cramer-McClanahan; and Luca, Marietta Rae, and Cora Mable Scalise. She is also survived by a brother-in-law Lowell Menefee, and by many cousins, nieces and nephews; and many loving friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Richard Payne, parents Clellan and Mable Speak, her sister Ruth (Benjamin Seth) Boldra, and brother Bob (Genevieve) Speak.
Reva was known as a quiet Christian witness, a calming and loving presence as a mother and grandmother, as a steady companion and friend. As a pastor’s wife, her quiet strength was evident while Richard pastored churches at: Paola, Kansas; Kirksville, Missouri; Hallsville, Missouri; Hazel Green, Missouri (east of Kirksville); Hutchinson, Kansas; Mount Zion (Ava), Missouri; Rosedale (Kansas City), Kansas; Cayman Brac, British West Indies; Littleton, Colorado; Macon, Missouri; Moulton, Iowa; and St. Charles, Missouri.
In her nursing career she worked in the areas from newborn nursery to geriatric psychiatry, served as Head Nurse in surgery, was Charge Nurse; and when called on to replace critical needs, served for a time as Director of Nursing, Personnel Director, and Administrator in nursing homes. She worked in Missouri and Kansas in a number of hospitals and later in several nursing homes, completing her last full day of clinical practice at the age of 76. She provided a calming influence and is held in high regard by all who worked with her.
Services for Reva Payne will be held Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, 2100 E. Shepherd Ave., Kirksville, MO 63501. The family will receive friends for visitation at the funeral home from 6-8:00 PM on Friday, November 17, and one hour before the service. Burial will be alongside her husband at Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, Jacksonville, MO 65260. A committal ceremony will be held Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM, at the Cemetery.
