Shirley Jean Matthew

Shirley Jean Matthew, 88 of Kirksville passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at Twin Pines Adult Care Center.

The daughter of Jesse Leland and Kathryn Pauline (Brent) Siegle, she was born June 25, 1929 in Kirksville, MO. On May 28, 1950 in Kirksville she was united in marriage to William Reid Matthew.

Shirley is survived by her husband, William; one son, Dr. William Michael Matthew and wife Nancy of Abilene, TX; one daughter, Kathryn Ann Rogers of Washington, MO; four grandchildren, Megan Rogers White and husband Kurt of Springfield, MO, Michael Rogers of Pacific, MO, Emily Matthew of Sacramento, CA, and Ryan Matthew of Abilene, TX; one great grandson, Kasen Michael White; one sister, Donna Lea Hunter of Riverside, CA; one niece, Sherry Shehan and one nephew, Rick Hunter.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Shirley attended the Kirksville public schools and graduated from the Kirksville High School in 1947. She attended nursing school in Kansas City and then Northeast State Teachers College. She worked several years for the Board of Education in Kirksville and for 17 years as secretary for the YMCA.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter I.G., 3rd Contemporary Club, the El Kadir Jewels, Tri Sigma Sorority, and was a charter member of the Missouri North Barbershop Chorus. She enjoyed line dancing and taught line dance classes. She also enjoyed genealogy, singing, quilling, trips to Padre Island in the winters, St. Louis Cardinal baseball and her great grandson. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday (May 13 2018) at Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday (May 14, 2018) at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Scott Beard and Reverend Carrol Davenport officiating. Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, MO.
